Daniel Fisher

Daniel Fisher served in the 32nd U.S.C.T with Company H from February 29, 1864, to August 22, 1865. He was born in 1818 in York County, Pennsylvania.1 Before enlistment, according to the 1850 Federal Census, he lived in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as a laborer, was married to Jane Fisher, and had one infant son, Daniel.2 The date of his marriage is unknown. He enlisted into the military as a private on February 29, 1864, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with Company H of the 32nd U.S.C.T. He is recorded as standing five feet and three inches tall, with dark hair, eyes, and complexion. He could not read or write. He was discharged on August 22, 1865, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, along with the rest of his company, due to the end of the war. The army charged him $2.31 for the loss or damage of a shelter tent, and $3.42 for the loss or damage of other camping equipment.3

According to the 1870 Federal Census, after the Civil War, Daniel Fisher moved to the Carlisle East Ward in Pennsylvania, where he worked as a laborer with his wife and four children, Mary Alexander, Mary Jane, David Fisher, and Harriett Fisher.4 In 1873 he was charged for assault and battery and found not guilty, and in 1876 he was charged with larceny, but his case was ignored by the Grand Jury.5 He was an active member of local clubs, and in 1875 he was an elective officer for the local Republican Club leading up to the presidential campaign, and he was elected once again as a permanent officer for the Republican Club in anticipation of the 1878 presidential campaign.6 His wife Jane and his daughter Mary Jane were taken to court in September of 1875 for an unknown suit, and were found not guilty, and the following year Jane and Mary Jane owed seven dollars to the County of Cumberland.7

Daniel Fisher died on January 10, 1881, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Lincoln Cemetery Memorial Park in Carlisle.8
