Cumberland County has been the home of thousands of individuals and organizations. Each has contributed to its history in ways both small and large. The Gardner Digital Library collects these stories in the Memory Bank. From Oral Histories of locals experiences in World War II to serving local civic organizations to growing up in Carlisle, Silver Springs Township, the West Shore, or Shippensburg, the Memory Bank is a place where the collected stories of Cumberland County can be shared and engaged with to present a fuller history of the County.

Jennifer McKenna

Interview of Jennifer McKenna for the Elizabeth V. and George F. Gardner Digital Library. McKenna discusses growing up in Carlisle and attending the Second Presbyterian Church. She further talks about leaving Carlisle and working in the South including a death row ministry that eventually led her to the Seminary and returning to Second Presbyterian as the Associate Pastor.

Steve Mellen

Interview of Steve Mellen for the Elizabeth V. and George F. Gardner Digital Library Memory Bank. Mellen discusses growing up in Carlisle, PA and his involvement in with St. Patrick Catholic Church. Mellen eventually became the head of Facilities at St. Patrick-a role he held for over 30 years.

Interview with Mary Merris at the Mechanicsburg Area Senior Adult Center on July 19th, 2002 with Heather Egan as a part of the Cumberland County Women During World War Two Oral History Project. Merris discusses postponing her wedding due to the outbreak of the war and the difficulty of raising small children on rations. Merris further talks about her life after her husband was drafted and life at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Tanis Monroy

Interview of Tanis Monroy at the Black History Festival in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the Elizabeth V. and George F. Gardner Digital Library Memory Bank. Monroy talks about moving to Carlisle at a young age from New York via Allentown and how he would visit the War College, write poetry, and walk around town. He discussed how he hoped for further integration between Dickinson College and the community and that students would be more open to experiencing Carlisle. He also hopes more residents will engage with the community through community service.

Marian Mundorff (Women in World War II)

Interview with Marian Mundorff at her home in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania on July 17, 2002 with Jen Elliott as part of the Cumberland County Women During World War Two Oral History Project. Mundorff discusses her family's efforts during the war including her own as a messenger during blackouts, making bandages at the hospital through Girl Scouts, and the scrap drives and bond sales at school.
